About Antigua

The city we now call "La Antigua" was the site of Guatemala's third capital and was called "Santiago De Los Caballeros".

Santiago was destroyed by a series of earthquakes in 1773 after which the capital was moved to the Valle de La Ermita, where it remains to this day.

President Jorge Ubico declared Antigua a National Monument and in 1965 the Pan American Institute of Geography and History declared it a Monumental City of The Americas.

In 1979 Antigua was included in UNESCO'S World Heritage Site list.
